The War of the Worlds  by H.G. Wells . A strange cylinder falls to the earth and as the people of a town in the near-London countryside look on, the lid unscrews to allow a horrifying creature to emerge. "A big greyish rounded bulk, the size perhaps, of a bear.... As it bulged up and caught the light, it glistened like wet leather." Curiosity turns to terror as the Martians build technological nightmares of war and move about the countryside, burning structures and the population with a Heat Ray, and dropping poisonous gas bombs with wanton disregard for the humans of earth. What follows is a history of the war, as seen thru the eyes of one man, alternately fascinated and repulsed by the Martians as one cylinder after another plunges from the sky. Written in H. G.
